What Is Parts Work?

Parts work is a non-pathologizing way of understanding ourselves as having different parts, or inner voices, that each have their own feelings, needs, beliefs, and ways of protecting us.

You might notice a part of you that wants to take a risk, while another part immediately says “absolutely not.” One part may crave connection while another pulls away. A part might be highly critical, perfectionistic, anxious, angry, or afraid.

Parts work doesn’t assume that any of these parts are bad or broken. Instead, we get curious about what each part is trying to do for you and how it came to take on its particular role.

Curiosity instead of conflict

Rather than trying to silence, control, or “get rid of” difficult parts of ourselves, we practice listening to them.

We might explore:
- What is this part afraid would happen?
- What is it trying to protect me from?
- What does it need?
- Is there another way forward?

Often, what initially feels like self-sabotage, resistance, or an unwanted pattern begins to make more sense when we understand the part behind it.

Establishing the whole Self

Parts work can help us develop a more compassionate relationship with our inner world. The Self acts like a parent to the parts, who are like children. Instead of being completely overwhelmed or identified with one part, we can begin to notice our parts while maintaining connection with a larger sense of Self.

The goal isn't to get rid of our parts or make them all agree. It's to build enough understanding and inner relationship that more of you gets to participate in your life.
