Super Full Moon
kneeling before each other on a couch
stroking arms with nails,
squeezing legs with thumbs
pressure and delicacy,
a soundtrack of our hearts
we’d been so lost in conversation
i gasp
when my eyes follow yours
out the window
to behold
the full super moon
a glistening pearl
in the pale pink
morning light,
high above
snow capped
Tahoe mountains
quiet bustling of lovers
all around us
drinking nectar and
kissing affirmations
soft giggles and
muted glitter chests
but you and i,
we can’t look away
from the moon,
how she holds us
strong and safe,
closer than ever,
blessing this worship,
protecting us
even when we look away,
even when we forget her
she is somber and
she is festive
beaming pride over our
kooky altar of release
i whisper,
“we live on such a beautiful planet”
and my voice is solemn,
like the silence that follows
and you sigh,
“oh Buba,
you’re gonna break my heart again”
i put my forehead
against yours
and we whimper
and we hold each other
as everyone dances and
makes love with their conversation
while on a little couch
we hold the grief of the world
silent and trembling,
there is so much love
so much gratitude
in this grief
“what are we gonna do, Buba?”
i wipe my tears
and whisper,
“we’re gonna keep learning-
learning how to help
because that’s all we can do.”
Look, look at this glistening blessing!
And look at this one, how it refracts!
This one is translucent, and this one opaque,
but both are illuminated by the same sun.
And you won’t believe how I found them!
This one was discovered
in the darkest corner of my closet,
when I finally faced my dread
and crawled inside to clean it out.
Now this one– get this–
the other day I was daydreaming of bubble gum,
and this rose quartz appeared
at my doorstep the very next morning.
I share these with you,
so that you might taste
the delectable flavors of
this generous existence
we find ourselves in.
I glimpse, as your blink your eyes
a little too slowly,
the disappointment
that only comes from comparison
and i hear the lilt in your voice
as you swaddle your loneliness
in feigned excitement
But don’t you get it?!
i don’t show you these jewels,
these testimonies,
to other you.
Look down at your feet!
right in front of you,
a glinting emerald
you’ve been stepping on,
looking past,
as you gaze into the clouds
adrift in the haze of the mind.
my prayer is that you look directly
upon your path,
that you laugh
at the absurd ways
you trip over your gifts,
at the ways this world dangles them
in the exact nooks and crannies
you almost overlooked.
and when you show me your new gems,
and my grief swells as i register
all the moments i swatted my blessings away
mistaking them for pests,
you can remind me
that there are endless more to come,
because we can create them together:
we can sing our favorite tune,
or catch new ones,
stumbling through song’s mystery
until the vapor of our harmony
crystalizes
right before our eyes.
