From the First Drop of Water
from the first drop of water
there is an unbroken chain
of love,
an effortful,
slow cry
to bring into being
a fuller aliveness
than what was before.
.
i see a baby
gripping mother’s thumb
she’ll learn much more
than i’ll ever know
oh, this work we do
is a marathon
i pray to
sustain,
to
s l o w
d
o
w
n
into this
j o u r n e y
to pray
to know, to feel
in my being
that i am
giving my life
to the sacred task
of repairing
what is broken.
that i am giving my life
to a story
much more magnificent
than i could write
alone,
than we could write
in one generation.
i craft the process
and let go of the result.
this is my prayer.
.
just as a bodhisattva
can’t sit down
to meditate
and expect
enlightenment,
(for it would defeat the purpose,)
so too this
organizing, this
healing
is spiritual work
we may not
finish building the house
we sketched out,
sweated over,
poured into,
in our lifetime
.
oh, the rain
that nourishes
the sprout
won’t see
the tree,
or maybe it will,
because it’s
all earth
in one form
or another.
the rain falls because
it must.
